It's been a while since I updated our blog, but we've been doing a lot! Our Google Classroom is up and running for both ELA and Writing. Students have added these courses to their online classrooms and are becoming more familiar with how to access them with their Chrome books. For those of you who may not be familiar with Google Classroom, it's an online learning platform that allows me to assign work, conduct online discussions, and share resources in a very streamlined, simple way.
We are also establishing our Word Work and Vocabulary routines. Each week, students will learn a word "chunk" which can also be described as a word family. We will learn affixes, either a prefix or a suffix, and students will be responsible for identifying words that fit these patterns. There will also be vocabulary words that are introduced in class, that I will encourage students to work into conversation throughout the week. I encourage students to take ownership of the new words that we talk about in class, and make them a part of their vocabularies by using them. The first word work quiz that I administered last week was a challenge, so I will retest on Wednesday the 31st. In the meantime, I've added nightly work work or vocabulary homework that will take 5 minutes or less. It is also extremely important for students to be reading independently every day, including time on the weekends. The only way to improve a skill is to practice!
Our annual Ice Cream Social is this week, Tuesday, from 6:00-7:30. Please come up and spend some time getting to know our Barrington family!
